Bill de Blasio is a well-known American politician who is currently Mayor of New York City. Who Is Bill de Blasio?

The outspoken mayor was born as Warren Wilhelm Jr to his parents, Maria Angela de Blasio and Warren Wilhelm on 8th May 1961 in Manhattan’s Doctors Hospital, New York City, New York, United States. His father who graduated from Yale University carried out contributing editorial work at Time Magazine. He also served in the United States military where he was involved in World War II and was awarded The Purple Heart following his contributions to his home country. On the other hand, his mother worked in the Office of War Information during World War II and was also the author of the book entitled, The Other Italy: The Italian Resistance in World War II (1988).

Bill has two elder brothers, Steven, and Donald Wilhelm. Following the separation of his parents when he was seven years old, he was brought up along with his brother, Donald by his mother and her relatives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When Bill was eighteen years old, his father took his life, having suffered from lung cancer. He officially took up his mother’s last name with his nickname ‘Bill’ and began answering Bill de Blasio in December 2001.

He attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 1979 and was among the student government where he was fondly known as Senator Provolone. He followed it up by enrolling at New York University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Metropolitan Studies. He later obtained his post-graduate degree in International Affairs from School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University, New York City.

Bill de Blasio kicked off his career in 1984 by participating in the Urban Fellows Program for the NYC Department of Juvenile Justice. Soon after his graduation from Columbia University in 1987, he joined Quixote Center, Maryland as a political organizer. He launched his career in politics in 1989 by becoming a volunteer coordinator for the mayoral campaign of David Dinkins which later paved way for him to work as an aide in City Hall.

Before being a 3-time NYC Council representing the 39th district including Brooklyn’s vicinity of Cobble Hill, Windsor Terrace, Borough Park, Kerisington, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus and Park Slope, the plainspoken Democrat assumed many political post which includes serving as a campaign manager for the palmy Charles Rangel’s 1994 re-election bid, regional director for US Department of Housing and Urban Development for New York and New Jersey, Brooklyn School District 15 member of school board, and Hillary Clinton’s triumphant US Senate bid campaign manager.

Furthermore, during his regime as a fellow of the NYC Council, de Blasio enacted many legislations which includes HIV/AIDS Housing Service Law, Gender-Based Discrimination Protection Law and the Benefits Translation for Immigrants Law. He further became the NYC Public Advocate by triumphing over Republican Alex Zablocki in November 3rd, 2009 general election.

The third NYC Public Advocate became mayor by capturing 72.2 percent of the votes in the 2013 election while his opponent Joe Lhota of the republican party took 24 percent of the votes. He also coasted to a second term in 2017 by garnering 66.5 percent of the votes against Republican Nicole Malliotakis. Among his accomplishments as a mayor is the enforcement of Universal Pre-Kindergarten for all New Yorkers by raising the taxes of residents earning above $500,000 and legalization of Marijuana. Bill de Blasio joined the long list of democrats vying for the presidential democratic nomination on 16th May 2019.

Bill de Blasio’s Family – His Daughter and Son

Bill de Blasio got acquainted with his now-wife, Chirlane McCray who is a poet and activist while they were working for Mayor David Dinkins. The duo exchanged marital vows in 1994 and did their honeymoon in Cuba. The marriage is blessed with two children, a daughter Chiara born on December 6, 1994, and a son, Dante born in 1998.

His daughter, Chiara is a graduate of Santa Clara University and previously worked with the City Hall as an intern in fighting domestic violence. Currently, she is an advisor on healthy relationships as she puts the knowledge she garnered in overcoming drugs and depression into use.

His son, Dante is a graduate of Yale University. He disclosed in a radio interview that he would like to have a career in politics. He also used the medium to canvass for his father’s presidential bid just like he successfully did during his father’s mayoral campaign with his op-ed on racism, housing, and New York’s stop-and-frisk policy.


Bill is quite tall as he is definitely the tallest mayor who has occupied the mayoral seat of NYC. He has a towering height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) and weighs 88 kg (194 lb).
